Understanding the Basics of IIDs
What is an ignition interlock device (IID)?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a car breathalyzer system installed in your vehicle to prevent a car from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver’s breath and may be required following a DUI violation. The IID device includes a mouthpiece for breath sampling, a handheld unit that measures breath alcohol content (BrAC), and a cord connecting the system to your vehicle’s ignition.

Using an Ignition Interlock Device
What happens if I fail the breath test when I am trying to start my car?
If you fail the breath test, your car won’t start. You may continue to submit samples as prompted. Multiple failed attempts can result in a temporary lockout, requiring you to wait before trying again, or a service lockout that will necessitate a visit to a service center.
If someone else blows into my IID and fails, am I responsible?
Can I leave my vehicle running if I’m not in it while the IID is installed?
Can I start my vehicle without blowing in the car breathalyzer?
What is a BrAC level?
BrAC stands for Breath Alcohol Content. You must remain under your state’s legal limit, usually 0.02, to start your vehicle. Each state determines how many attempts you have at providing a passing sample. If you have questions about the legal limits in your state, you can contact an Intoxalock state specialist for help answering specific questions about state ignition interlock laws.

What if my vehicle stalls or won’t start?
If your vehicle stalls, turn the key off. Within 2-4 seconds, your Intoxalock device will recognize this and initiate a 1-3 minute countdown. In most states, once the countdown begins, you can restart your vehicle without submitting a breath sample.
If your car doesn’t start, check your battery’s health by holding down the device button for 5 seconds. You can also test your car radio or lights to see if the battery is charged. If your battery is fine, contact our customer support team for assistance with troubleshooting your IID.

Ignition interlock devices are designed to detect any source of alcohol, including substances like mouthwash, perfume, hand sanitizer, household cleaners, and even some automotive products like wiper fluid. It’s important to avoid using these products inside your car. Wait at least 15 minutes after eating or drinking before submitting a breath sample. If you need to rinse your mouth, use water or an alcohol-free mouthwash.

What should I do if I experience issues with my interlock while traveling out of state?
What should I do if I get a positive BrAC reading on the car breathalyzer?
If your Intoxalock ignition interlock device detects a positive BrAC reading:
Failed Startup Test: You may be prompted to retest repeatedly. You can keep trying or turn off the ignition. If asked for a retest after turning off the ignition, submit a sample as requested. All failed tests are recorded and reported. Each state has rules on how many failed tests are allowed before requiring your device to be serviced.
Failed Random Retest While Driving: You'll be prompted to retest until you pass or turn off the ignition. The same reporting and service requirements may apply.
