What Happens if I Try to Bypass My Ignition Interlock Device?

We understand that most of our users didn’t ask to have an ignition interlock device in their cars. We know you might feel frustrated at having to comply with laws requiring you to install a car breathalyzer to regain or retain driving privileges.

That frustration isn’t an excuse to try to circumvent the IID, whether it’s to drive under the influence again or not. Tampering with your ignition interlock device is a terrible idea that can have serious legal consequences.

Circumventing an IID

Intoxalock users with automotive or electrical knowledge may be tempted to disconnect the device from their vehicle or to otherwise alter the wiring connections made by the service center. If you do remove or disable the device, your IID provider will be notified of the removal and will notify your state legal authority that you are no longer in compliance with your ignition interlock requirement.

Tamper Proof Devices

Any attempt to remove or disconnect your ignition interlock device or wiring will be apparent to any service center. All the connections between the Intoxalock device and the wiring in your vehicle are sealed with a tamper evident material.

Reporting Device Tampering

Intoxalock service centers will contact Intoxalock immediately if they find any evidence of tampering. Intoxalock is then legally obligated to inform your monitoring agency that you are not in compliance with your ignition interlock requirement.

Tampering with your Intoxalock device or attempting to bypass your breathalyzer connections is considered as being out of compliance with your IID requirements. This means that you’re no longer driving legally. Clearly, this can result in more legal consequences for you.

What If I'm at the End of the Lease?

Even if you think you’re at the end of your lease, verify that you are no longer required to use the breathalyzer and contact Intoxalock to schedule a de-installation appointment.

Removing your device early, even if done with innocent intentions, will put you in violation of your IID requirement. If you’re found to have violated your requirement through device tampering or removal, it can mean a longer ignition interlock lease requirement, loss of all driving privileges for a period of time and hefty fines.

Essentially, disabling your IID puts you right back where you were after your initial driving offense — in trouble with the law, with limited or no driving privileges, owing fines and, at the end of the process, still required to use an ignition interlock device. The device must be removed by your interlock provider.

Avoid Personal Liability

After a drunk driving offense, it can be tempting to seek the easy way out and to continue to drive as you did before. Take it from us, it’s not worth it.

Tampering with your Intoxalock device or its connections to your vehicle will put you in even worse shape than before. Attempting to bypass your breathalyzer will mean more trouble with the law, more fines and more trouble getting around due to driving restrictions.

Trying to get around your IID requirement might be a tempting thought, but it can end up as a major setback for you. The easiest way to make it through your IID requirement is simply to comply with it, and prove that you are capable of choosing to drive sober. Once your state requirements are met, call us to schedule your appointment for removal.
