Troubleshooting Common Interlock Device Problems

Intoxalock ignition interlock devices (also referred to as IIDs, BAIIDs, car breathalyzers, and ignition interlock systems) are designed with the purpose of simple activation to get you back on the road in a fast and convenient manner.

If you are experiencing interlock device problems, here are a few helpful hints for how you can troubleshoot your car breathalyzer:

  • Before submitting a breath sample to your ignition interlock system, it’s important to wait 10-15 minutes after eating or drinking anything
  • If you are using your interlock device in a cold weather environment, try using Intoxalock’s exclusive sleep mode to conserve your battery  (Sleep Mode is not available to customers in NY, MA and WI)
  • If your vehicle stalls, turn your vehicle off and attempt to restart it without submitting a breath sample after your interlock device recognizes that your vehicle is off and starts a 1-3 minute countdown

What happens if I fail an ignition interlock breath test?

If you fail an ignition interlock breath test your vehicle will not start. In some cases, you will have to wait a few minutes before being allowed to submit another sample. Learn more about failing a breath test.

In most states, if you fail your breath test too many times your IID will go into a service lockout. Each state has different requirements that allow you to take a certain amount of breath tests before having your device go into a service lockout. Be sure to practice and get comfortable with the device once it is installed in your vehicle so that you can feel confident when using it.
