Can Someone Else Drive My Car with a Breathalyzer?

Intoxalock’s mission is to promote sober driving, no matter who is behind the wheel.

One of the questions you might have when you install an ignition interlock device is whether someone else will be allowed to drive your car while your interlock is installed. Some people who are required to install IIDs share vehicles with spouses or teenage children and wonder if they will need to make alternate driving arrangements for those individuals.

Can someone else blow into your car breathalyzer?

Yes, any driver may blow into your car breathalyzer and drive your interlock-equipped vehicle if they will be the one behind the wheel.

However, even if the additional driver has a clean driving record with no drunk driving convictions, he or she will still be required to submit breath samples before starting the car and at random points throughout the drive as required by each state’s regulations.

Who should I trust with my interlock device?

There is no way to disable the device for certain drivers, so it’s important to make sure anybody operating your vehicle is properly trained on how to operate the ignition interlock to avoid errors and improper usage.

It is advisable to be extremely careful with who you choose to hand your keys over to. We recommend that Intoxalock users diligently keep track of who has driven their car and when, as the Intoxalock customer will be held responsible for all the information on the data log, regardless of who was driving.

At Intoxalock, we are committed to helping you get your life back on track after a drunk driving conviction. Ignition interlock devices allow you to regain driving privileges even after a DUI. For more questions about installing or using an IID or to find an Intoxalock installation location near you, please contact us at (833) 623-0200 or contact us online now.
