12 Questions to Ask Your Interlock Technician at Your Install Appointment
This blog is for general information only and is not legal advice. Always consult a qualified DUI or criminal defense attorney and your monitoring authority about your specific situation. If you're convicted of a DUI and need to learn more about ignition interlocks, call our team at (888) 283-5899.
Avoid mistakes, stay compliant, and feel confident using your ignition interlock device by getting the right answers at your IID installation.
Getting an ignition interlock device (IID) installed can feel intimidating, especially if you have lots of questions. But having questions is a good thing! The more you understand your device, the easier it is for you to use it and stay on track.
But as you’re preparing for your appointment, just know you don’t need to figure everything out alone. Our support team has helped over a million people work toward regaining driving privileges, and they’ve heard everything.
Not sure where to start? The questions below come directly from customers. Use them as your guide to get the information you need when you show up for your installation appointment.
Question 1: How long will my interlock installation take?
Your ignition interlock installation appointment does more than install your IID in your vehicle. It gives you a chance to learn how everything works and set yourself up for success.
Most installations take about one to two hours, but actual times may vary depending on vehicle make and model, age of the car, and technician availability. “Installation on an older sedan may take about one hour,” says Steven Matos of Sober Tech in Everett, Washington, a certified Intoxalock installation service center, “whereas installation on a newer vehicle with advanced electronics could take 3–4 hours due to its technology.”
Question 2: Do I need to be present during my IID install appointment?
It’s a good idea. Your technician will show you how to use the device, explain testing requirements, and answer your questions. You’ll also get the chance to practice with the device and get comfortable with the process. The more confident you feel before you leave, the easier it will be to make using the device part of your daily routine.
If you have more questions about what to expect or want help before your appointment, talk to a State Specialist at (888) 283-5899. We’re here to make the process as smooth as possible.
Question 3: How do I blow into my ignition interlock device (IID)?
Every ignition interlock device uses a specific breath pattern. Most Intoxalock devices use a blow-inhale-blow method. This pattern is straightforward and may feel easier to perform than other breath patterns. It helps the device accurately measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) and helps confirm the sample is coming from a person. Many drivers find it more natural since it follows a normal breathing rhythm, but you still need to practice it to feel comfortable.

Ask your technician to walk you through it step by step, then practice a few times before you leave. That hands-on practice makes a big difference, says Aaron Hill with CarTronics Made in the Shade in Santa Rosa, California, a certified Intoxalock installation service center. “To avoid lockouts and make it easy for customers to start to drive again without unneeded stress, our technicians instruct people on the blow… sequence.”
Getting it right from the start can help you build a reliable routine.
Question 4: How often do random retests occur, and how long do I have to submit a retest?
Random retests play a key role in the process. They confirm continued compliance while you drive. But be prepared: a random retest request may happen while you’re driving.
You’ll get a prompt on the device when a retest is required. All states provide at least a 5-minute window to complete the retest safely; some states allow more time. At your installation appointment, check your user guide to learn the time limit in your state. Knowing that timing may help you avoid unnecessary violations and help you respond on time.
Ask your technician to walk you through random retests and how they work. They should be able to give you more insight on what you can expect. If you want to brush up on the process, watch our step-by-step guide to random retests.

Question 5: How do I avoid a contaminated reading?
Not every failed test involves alcohol. Everyday products like mouthwash, certain foods, or hygiene products can affect readings. Breath sprays, energy drinks, and even some medications can leave a temporary residue that may affect test results. Rinsing your mouth out or waiting at least 15 minutes after eating and drinking can help reduce the risk of a contaminated test result.
Ask your technician what to avoid and habits that can help produce consistent test results. Some customers benefit from keeping a water bottle in their vehicle.
Question 6: What is an IID lockout?
A lockout is a function of interlock devices that prevent your vehicle from starting.
Lockouts happen but it doesn’t mean you’ve failed; they are state mandated to enforce compliance. Remember, ignition interlock program requirements vary by state and you should rely on your user guide and state-specific materials.
There are two different types of lockouts:
- Temporary – this happens when your interlock detects a violation
- Service – this happens when your IID starts a countdown in days and indicates it will stop your car unless you get it serviced.
Each state enforces its own rules on what triggers a lockout and how it needs to be addressed.
Common causes of lockouts include:
- Failed breath sample
- Missed retest
- Missed calibration
- Tampering with the device
- Incorrect Vehicle Maintenance
Be sure to refer to your user manual to learn more about what triggers a lockout in your state, what steps to take if one occurs, and who to call for help. Lockouts can be resolved quickly once you understand the cause and next steps.
Question 7: How do I schedule a calibration appointment, and how much do they cost?
Calibration keeps your device working properly and ensures accurate BrAC readings. Most states require calibration every 30 to 120 days, depending on your state program requirements. Consult your state-specific requirements. It’s important to complete your calibration on time to stay compliant.
When you’re at your installation appointment, make sure your technician tells you how to schedule your appointment, how often you need them, and the cost of each calibration so you can be prepared. Planning can help you stay organized and avoid unnecessary disruptions.
Question 8: How long do I have to schedule a calibration after the device alerts me?
Your IID will notify you when it’s time for a calibration. An IID alert will trigger a countdown for you to get your device calibrated.
Missing a calibration can lead to a lockout, so it’s important to get clear on timing. Refer to your user manual or call an Intoxalock state specialist at (888) 283-5899 to learn how much time you have to schedule an appointment after your alert, and what happens if you miss the deadline. You could also ask your installer how much the service center charges for a calibration and how long those types of appointments usually last.
Never miss a calibration with the Intoxalock Mobile App – get reminders, schedule a calibration, and get directions to your local service center.
Question 9: Does an IID drain my car battery?
Your interlock connects to your vehicle’s battery to keep it powered, so it’s important to keep your battery in good condition. This can mean driving regularly to keep the battery charged and setting your device to sleep mode.
You can ask your technician for practical tips and discuss things that may affect your battery performance, such as:
- Driving regularly to keep the battery charged
- Avoiding long periods of inactivity
- Using sleep mode when needed
Cold and hot weather affect your battery, so ask how to manage seasonal changes. You can also check your battery and connections regularly or have a professional test if there are changes to your IID’s performance capabilities.
Tip: If you need to replace your battery, ask your technician or contact customer support at (888) 283-5899 to confirm if there are any state-specific steps you need to take first.
Question 10: Can I disconnect my device and take it inside in cold weather?
This question comes up often, especially in winter climates. Whether you can disconnect the handheld unit depends on your state’s rules.
Ask your technician what applies to your specific situation before taking any action. Some states allow you to disconnect the handheld unit and bring it inside to keep it warm, which can help with faster startup and support battery performance.
You may be able to use:
- Trickle charger - an electrical device delivering a steady, low-amp current to help maintain battery life and prevent dead batteries, while protecting against overcharging.
- Block heater - an electrical heating element to warm your car battery and fluids before starting the engine.
You can avoid delays and startup issues by knowing how to change habits in seasonal extremes.
Question 11: What is sleep mode?
Sleep mode helps protect your vehicle battery when you don’t drive for extended periods. It temporarily powers down the device to reduce battery drain while your vehicle sits unused. Activating it before extended downtime can preserve your battery without affecting your overall program requirements. Using this feature correctly may help reduce unnecessary battery problems.
At your installation appointment, your technician should be able to demonstrate how to activate and deactivate sleep mode and talk with you about when to use it and how it affects your testing schedule.
Question 12: Do I need extra mouthpieces?
We recommend always having two mouthpieces on hand – one on your interlock and one stored as a backup. However, you may want to discuss what’s best for you and your habits with your Intoxalock technician.
Your technician should have additional mouthpieces for you as needed, but it helps to double check. If it’s hard for you to get to that location on a regular basis, you can request more by contacting customer support.
In the meantime, your technician can also tell you how often your mouthpiece should be replaced and show you how to clean them properly. This can go a long way to making your mouthpiece last.
