What Happens When you Fail a Breath Test

Wondering what happens if you fail a breath test on your ignition interlock device? We’ll guide you through the steps to follow if your device displays 'Failed' after providing a breath sample.

Failed Breath Test Before Start-Up

If you fail a test before starting your vehicle, your Intoxalock device will prevent the car from starting.

  • Immediate Lockout: Depending on state regulations, you may receive an immediate lockout if your start-up sample exceeds 0.08 BrAC.
  • Retest Option: If your state allows a retest, press the square button on the device. Once 'BLOW' is displayed, provide another breath sample as usual.

If the retest is passed, the device will display "START CAR." If you fail again, the device may enter lockout mode, requiring service. Some jurisdictions may also trigger your horns and lights to activate after multiple failed attempts.
