The annual Super Bowl is known for all things beer: beer commercials, beer cheese dip, and of course, celebratory beer drinking. In fact, the highest annual sales of beer in the US occurs within the two weeks leading up to the big game. According to Nielsen, 50 million cases of beer are sold each year around this time. During Super Bowl Sunday, occurrences of drunk driving are 22% higher than a typical Sunday (AMS).
Along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Intoxalock is sharing the “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign. This campaign sees the Super Bowl as an excellent time to remind people of safe driving practices and prevent crashes. After all, those super bowl commercials are expensive - and so are drunk driving charges. NHTSA reports that the average DUI costs around $10,000, and that is just the court and legal expenses.
If you plan to celebrate Super Bowl festivities with alcoholic beverages, choose one of these great options to keep the roads safe so that we all win!
- Make a Plan: Arrange ahead of time for a designated driver – either someone at the party or somebody who will pick you up when you are ready to leave.
- Use a Car Service: Order a rideshare service or call for a taxi. In fact, NHTSA even has an app for that—SaferRide—which is available for Apple and Android devices and can connect you to a local cab company or with a friend who can come pick you up.
- Trains, Busses or Trolleys: Plan to use public transit if it is available in your city.
- Be a Team Player: Volunteer to be the designated driver and make sure everyone gets home safely.
