What is an IID?

An ignition interlock device (or IID) is basically a breathalyzer that is installed into a vehicle for the purpose of preventing drunk driving. It requires the driver to submit a breath sample before being able to start the car and then requires periodic samples while driving to ensure that no alcohol has been consumed while the vehicle is in operation.

How Do I Know if I Need an IID?

The state of Washington has minimum time requirements for all DUI-convicted drivers. Additional rules or obligations may be required depending on the specific county in which the offense occurred. Most DUI-convicted drivers in Washington receive documentation specifying that they need to get an IID installed in their vehicle.

Driving without an ignition interlock device installed as required by the court or any other state authority could result in jail time.

How Much Will My Offense Cost?

There are many costs associated with a conviction for DUI or a similar offense. They include increased insurance rates, possible lost wages, fines, and transportation expenses if your driver’s license is revoked. If you are required to install an IID, you will be responsible for installation and monthly leasing fees. Overall, the variety of costs associated with a DUI can total several thousand dollars.

IID lease rates cost a few dollars per day with other required purchases including, but not limited to, installation, activation, calibration, and removal. Contact Intoxalock by calling 866-501-3649 for an instant personalized quote that includes installation at a service location near you. Any potential charges will be available before signing your lease.

Other DUI Costs: The average cost for a DUI in Washington can range anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000 or even more after fines, attorney fees, other costs, and depending on the county in which the offense occurred.

Financial Assistance: You may be eligible for financial help in the state of Washington. If you’re approved, the Washington Department of Licensing may partially reimburse your ignition interlock provider monthly for each service: installation, monthly lease fee, device removal, or transfer the device to another vehicle should you need to.

How Do I Regain Driving Privileges in Washington?

Washington allows some drivers to regain driving privileges with an Ignition Interlock Driver’s License, or IIL. To be eligible, drivers must be convicted of DUI, cannot have “minor in possession” as part of their offense, and must not be a habitual traffic DUI-convicted driver or have their license suspended for another reason. To qualify:

  • Install an IID from an approved provider (like Intoxalock 866-501-3649) and show proof of installation (a certificate is provided at installation appointment)
  • Pay any fines, penalties, and the application fee
  • Show proof of SR-22 liability insurance if required in their case. Verify requirement with the Washington Department of Licensing
  • Complete the application and submit via mail or in person
