First Offense DUI in Georgia
Those convicted of a DUI in Georgia are facing financial penalties and administrative penalties. They may have to pay a $200-$210 fine, complete a DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program, and in some cases have their license suspended for up to 12 months. After 120 days, some drivers may be able to obtain a limited permit if they have completed their DUI school requirement and provide a certificate of completion from a DUI school approved by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. An ignition interlock device is typically not required for offenders if this is their first offense, but some offenders may be required to install an IID depending on the circumstances of the offense.
Second Offense DUI in Georgia
Anyone convicted for DUI a second time in Georgia risks increased penalties. If the offense is within 5 years of a prior incident, a driver’s license can be suspended for 3 years. In some cases, drivers can obtain a restricted driving permit if they install an ignition interlock device from an approved provider like (Intoxalock 833-389-0173). They must also complete DUI school at an approved location, and evaluation and treatment. They can obtain an interlock permit if they meet all criteria and install the IID but must wait 120 days to apply. Individuals designated as Habitual Violators may be eligible for an HVPL with an interlock restriction after serving a period of 2 years of license revocation. This includes enrollment in clinical treatment and the receipt of a certificate of eligibility for an Ignition Interlock Limited Driving Permit from a drug court program.
The period of compliance does not begin until the DDS has issued the offender their ILDP.
Third Offense DUI in Georgia
For multiple offenses, the penalties increase. If a driver is convicted for a third time, they will be considered a habitual violator and will have their license suspended for five years, in addition to a fine of $750-$1,000. They will need to complete DUI school at an approved location and install an IID from an approved provider like (Intoxalock 833-389-0173) to regain driving privileges. It is possible for repeat offenders to obtain an interlock permit after waiting 2 years to apply, but they must meet all criteria.
How Long Do I Need an Interlock in Georgia?
Repeat offenders in Georgia are able to apply for an Ignition Interlock Limited Driving Permit, which requires them to install an IID from an approved provider like (Intoxalock 833-389-0173). The interlock term for offenders arrested after July 1, 2013, is 12 months.

Getting an Interlock Limited Driving Permit in Georgia
Eligible offenders are able to apply for an ILDP in Georgia after waiting 120 days. They must meet a variety of criteria in order to qualify for an ILDP, including:
- Serve the suspension period mandated by the court (typically this is 120 days, but this can be extended depending on the number of previous offenses or specifics of the offense)
- Pay any necessary fines
- Attend and complete DUI school at a location approved by the Georgia Department of Driver Services and provide a certificate proving completion
- Complete a clinical evaluation and any mandated treatment programs, and show proof of completion
- Install an IID from an approved provided like (Intoxalock 833-389-0173)
- Submit the license fee and any other applicable fees to the appropriate parties
