What is an IID?

An ignition interlock device, or IID, is sometimes called a car breathalyzer. The devices are wired into a vehicle’s ignition system. Once installed, an IID will require the driver to take and pass a Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) test before they can start the car. The device will also request random retests during most trips to prevent tampering and ensure that the driver remains sober.

If IID installation is mandated by the court following an alcohol-based driving offense, then all testing results will be shared with the state’s monitoring authority. Interlocks are often a requirement for regaining driving privileges following an offense. Devices are available on a voluntary basis to anyone who wants to install one as well.

How do I know if I need an IID?

If you are required to install an ignition interlock device following an offense, this will be made clear to you in court. Typically, state law will dictate the interlock term, so you can often find this information on your state’s official website. If you are at all unsure that you need an interlock, check with your attorney or your state’s department of motor vehicles, who should be able to assist.

How much will my offense cost?

There are many costs associated with a conviction for DUI or a similar offense. They include increased insurance rates, possible lost wages, fines, and transportation expenses if your driver’s license is revoked. If you are required to install an IID, you will be responsible for installation and monthly leasing fees. Overall, the variety of costs associated with a DUI can total several thousand dollars.

Intoxalock interlock devices typically cost between $100 and $150 to install, and $2.50 to $3.50 per day to lease. Intoxalock offers flexible payment options and accepts payments online.

What steps do I need to take?

Once you are certain you are required to install an ignition interlock device, you will make an installation appointment at an Intoxalock service center near you. You will need to bring any appropriate paperwork, which may include the court order for IID installation and your vehicle’s registration. At your installation appointment, technicians will show you how the device works and provide you with a Certificate of Installation.

Once installed, you and anyone else who drives your car will be required to take a BrAC test before starting the car. You will also need to return to the service center regularly (every 30 to 90 days, depending on your state) for device calibration.
