How to Disconnect an Interlock Device

Ignition Interlock Device Removal Process & Requirements

Ignition interlock devices are connected to your car’s starter and sometimes also your car horn and windshield wipers. Because of this, service centers that install them are specially trained in their removal.

A car-savvy person may be tempted to remove their interlock device (IID) themselves. Although the initial removal may be successful, your IID provider will be notified that the device was tampered with.

Tampering with an ignition interlock device could lead to severe consequences such as:

      • Longer ignition interlock lease requirement
      • Loss of all driving privileges
      • Hefty fines

Any sort of tampering with the device or any work that is done on your vehicle without notifying your provider prior will result in a lockout and find you in non-compliance of your lease state’s regulations.

      What’s a Lockout?

A lockout it when your ignition interlock device prevents your vehicle from starting until a certain amount of time has elapsed or your device is re-calibrated.

Lockouts can be cause for a variety of reasons including when a person has several failed attempts at blowing a clean test. Customers are usually charged fees for lockouts due to the extra labor involved in ending a lockout.

      What Is State Compliance?

To be in compliance of something means that you’re following the rules. Each state has different laws for how they enforce DUIs. However, in each state that requires a DUI or OUI offender to install an ignition interlock device if the offender removes the device before they are allowed, they are no longer in compliance of the state and may receive some form of punishment.

Always check with the state your offense is in to make sure you have completed all of the requirements before removing your device.

How to Make a De-Installation Appointment
