Intoxalock is an extremely user-friendly ignition interlock device designed to keep drivers safe on the road with minimal intervention. To activate the device, press the activation button located just beneath the LED screen. Next, wait for the LED screen to display the word “blow.” Once the device shows it is ready, provide your breath sample into the device mouthpiece to test your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC).
There are two methods for providing a breath sample with the Intoxalock, depending on your state’s requirements. The first and most common method is a blow/inhale/blow pattern, which resembles heavy breathing. The other is a straight blow method that requires a more forceful breath. Check your user’s manual for detailed instructions for your state.
Depending on your state’s regulations, the Intoxalock handheld will either display your BrAC or it will read “pass” or “fail” after your breath sample is submitted. Once you have passed the test, you can put your key in the ignition and will be able to start your vehicle as you normally would.
All states mandate that the driver provides retests at random intervals of time when the vehicle is running. Intoxalock will signal the need for a retest with a loud beep. You should submit your breath sample as soon as you safely can. If you don’t feel comfortable providing a breath sample in your ignition interlock device while driving, Intoxalock allows you enough time to pull your vehicle over to the side of the road before providing your sample.
If the device detects alcohol on your breath during a retest, your vehicle will not turn off while in motion. Your device might signal for you to pull over and safely turn off your car by activating the horn or flashing the car lights, though.
