Three Best Practices for Keeping Your Ignition Interlock Device COVID-Safe

How Often Should I Clean My Ignition Interlock Device?

You use your ignition interlock device every time you start your car, so it’s a sure bet the device gets dirty. It’s a good idea to clean your IID at least once per day, and more if you are interacting with the public. The novel coronavirus spreads through the air and could transfer to your device. To be safe, clean every time you interact with the general public.

COVID-19 has changed the idea of cleaning the device. Where previously you would want to clean the device, now you want to clean and sanitize it. This may require you to use specific cleaning solutions or wipes.

What Should I Use to Clean My Device?

There are two major parts to Intoxalock ignition interlock devices. The mouthpiece, and the device body. There are different cleaning methods for each. Here’s what you should do:

      • Cleaning the mouthpiece — the mouthpiece is a clear piece of plastic that attaches to your device. If you share your car, it’s a good idea to have several spare mouthpieces to ensure everyone always has a clean one to use. Wash the mouthpiece with soap and hot water, and let it dry. If you need to sanitize it, sanitize it before washing with soap and water. Your local Intoxalock location can provide them for you. If you are not able to go to a nearby location, please email help@intoxalock.com to request additional mouthpieces.
      • Cleaning the device body — it’s important to keep the device body away from water. Do not pour water into the mouthpiece or into the device itself. Use a disinfectant to rid the device of surface germs and wipe with sanitizing wipes. Be careful to check and ensure it’s safe to ingest, since you will be putting the mouthpiece in your mouth and may ingest particles. Make sure your device is fully dry before attempting to take your next breath test.

Since some sanitizing wipes contain alcohol, it’s important to wait at least 20 minutes after cleaning to take a breath test. The alcohol vapor can remain in the air inside your car and impact your breath alcohol test if you try too soon.

      Ignition Interlock Device Cleaning Tips

Now that you know HOW to clean your device, there are some other things you can do to make life easier. Try doing the following to set yourself up for success when it comes to your BrAC test and preventing infection.

      • Keep supplies close at hand — Use airtight plastic bags to store cleaning supplies in your vehicle. Keep wipes, spray cleaner, paper towels on hand to wipe your device after every use if you’re concerned about germs.
      • Keep backup mouthpieces nearby — we’ve already recommended getting extra mouthpieces. Keep one or two in your car in a sealed bag so it stays clean, and use in case of emergency or if your others are not clean. This will help prevent the spread of COVID and other illnesses.
      • Make it a habit — once you perform these sanitizing and cleaning actions, they will start to become second-nature. Get used to them so you never forget!
      • Reminder - DO NOT put any liquid down inside of the device. Customers are responsible for any damage to the device.
