Drunk Driving Caused 38% of Holiday Weekend Traffic Fatalities from 2015-2019
DES MOINES, IA - Intoxalock wants to remind all drivers this holiday weekend: Don’t lose your freedom to drive while celebrating over the Fourth of July. Choose a sober driver, or get a voluntary interlock to prevent a mistake that can change your life.
For the last two summers, many summer celebrations have been canceled or altered due to the coronavirus pandemic. This summer, many people across the United States are planning on traveling and other activities to celebrate the Fourth.
Despite rising gas prices, AAA predicts that more than 42 million Americans will take road trips of 50 miles or longer this holiday weekend. By comparison, 3.5 million people are expected to travel by air. This large amount of road travel means that traffic will be congested, and drivers may be on unfamiliar roads.
When traffic conditions get crowded, with many drivers who may be unfamiliar with the area, it can be very dangerous. Add alcohol to the mix, and everyone is at risk. Drunk driving makes the roads unsafe for not only the driver, but for every person on the road and pedestrians nearby.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that between 2015 and 2019, 1,339 drivers were killed in car crashes over the Fourth of July weekend, and of those drivers, 38% were drunk. In 2019 alone, 69% of people who died in alcohol-related car crashes were in a crash with at least one driver or motorcyclist with a blood alcohol concentration at or above .15, a BAC that is nearly twice the legal limit in most states.
Intoxalock encourages drivers to plan ahead if they will be drinking. Choosing a designated driver, arranging for a shuttle or cab, taking rideshare, or making use of public transportation are all great options to choose. Staying the night at a friend or family member’s home instead of driving is also a safe bet.
Intoxalock can help too. Voluntary interlock devices are available in all 50 states, and can be wired into your vehicle to help prevent you from making a fatal mistake. Intoxalock is fully stocked and ready to help anyone struggling with alcohol addiction, and anyone concerned about their ability to make the right choice about driving.
Once installed, a voluntary interlock will require the driver to test their BAC and pass before they can start the car. Intoxalock prevents hundreds of thousands of people from driving while under the influence every year thanks to mandated and voluntary interlocks.
