The IN Ignition Interlock Program
In Indiana, operating while intoxicated, or OWI, is the term for alcohol-related driving offenses. The legal blood alcohol content level in the state is .08 percent. Offenders found to have a BAC at or above that level risk a variety of penalties, including fines, jail time, and license suspension. Some offenders can regain their driving privileges if they agree to install an ignition interlock device (IID) from an approved provider.What Happens if I Get an OWI in Indiana?
First OWI Offense
- Up to 60 days in jail, or one year if BAC is > .15 percent
- Fines up to $500, possible increase up to $5,000 if BAC > .15 percent
- License suspended for 180 days
- Interlock required for 60 days, or longer if BAC is > .15 percent
Second OWI Offense
- Up to 60 days in jail, or one year if BAC is > .15 percent
- Fines up to $500, possible increase up to $5,000 if BAC > .15 percent
- License suspended for one year
- Interlock required for 60 days, or longer if BAC is > .15 percent
Third OWI Offense
- Up to 60 days in jail, or one year if BAC is > .15 percent
- Fines up to $500, possible increase up to $5,000 if BAC > .15 percent
- License suspended for one year, possibly longer
- Interlock required for 60 days, or longer if BAC is > .15 percent
What Happens if I Fail to Complete or Refuse to Submit to an OWI Test in Indiana?
If a driver refuses to take a test, they will still have consequences. If they have not been convicted of OWI, their driver’s license will be suspended for one year. If there is a prior offense, the license suspension can increase to two years.
How Do I Regain Driving Privileges in Indiana?
Indiana allows some offenders to regain driving privileges with an ignition interlock device. They must also meet other criteria, including:
- Install an IID from an approved provider and provide proof of installation
- Pay any required fines to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles
- Check your BMV for eligibility
- Complete any required probation, treatment, or community service obligations
The court may require additional criteria to be met depending on the circumstances of the incident.

You are required to cover the cost of your ignition interlock device if you are mandated to install it. Indiana customers will pay a deposit of $91.99 to $100, plus a $29.99 setup fee. The monthly lease costs $41.99 to $89.99.
You can make an appointment with the service center of your choosing. You do not need to wait for approval before installing, but you should make sure you are aware of the requirements before making your appointment.
You will need your Indiana driver’s license number and the name of the registered owner of the vehicle.
