Before starting the vehicle, the driver simply initiates a deep breath lung sample into the device. Within 10 seconds, an LED readout will inform the driver of his/her breath alcohol concentration. Upon successful completion, the display will register a "start" and allow the driver to operate the vehicle. If failed, the driver will be able to submit another breath sample in approximately five minutes.

The "Intoxalock®" will prevent the driver from starting the vehicle until his or her breath alcohol concentration falls below the unit's preset limit.

A data log of vehicle use is printed out, when the Intoxalock® is calibrated. The data log records all vehicle activity by time and date. This information is vital for court records and other legal documentation to assure compliance with state laws.
